Cameras come through Home Assistant: Ring, UniFi Protect and other cameras in Home Assistant. Cameras from HomeKit don't work yet.
Steps: a camera on a face
- Long-press the home face. The face enters edit mode.
- Tap +, choose Camera, then a camera and a size.
- Tap Done.
- Tap the camera widget. The image opens full screen.
The widget refreshes the image every ten seconds. Full screen, the app shows live video: through Home Assistant's stream, through WebRTC if the camera only supports that (like Ring), or otherwise the still image.
Steps: the doorbell
The doorbell companion is there by itself. It works when Home Assistant reports your doorbell as an event, as the Ring integration does.
- When someone rings and the iPad has been untouched for a minute, the camera opens full screen. If someone is using the iPad, a card appears at the top right.
- Tap the yellow button. If the camera supports talking back, like Ring, it is called Talk and you speak through the microphone; the first time, iPadOS asks for access. Otherwise it is called Listen and you hear the camera.
- Tap the button at the bottom right: a strip with your locks and your other cameras appears along the bottom, with the picture still above it. Tap a lock to open or lock it, a camera to see it.
- Tap the red × to close.
Steps: choosing the doorbell's camera and locks
- Swipe up from the bottom edge, tap the gear at the bottom left, then Companion.
- Tap Doorbell.
- Under Camera, choose which camera opens. Automatic (matched to the doorbell by name) looks for the camera that belongs to the doorbell.
- If you don't want all locks in the call, turn off All Locks under Locks in the call and tick the locks you want.
Check
- In Settings › Companion › Doorbell, tap Show Now: the call opens without anyone ringing.
- Tap a camera widget: the image opens full screen.
- Ring the doorbell: the camera opens on the iPad, large or as a card.
Not working?
The app recognises a doorbell by an event entity of class doorbell or with
event ding. Check in Home Assistant that your doorbell has such an entity.
An old ring, for example after reconnecting, opens nothing.
Also check that On is on in Settings › Companion › Doorbell.
The app finds the camera by name next to the doorbell. If there is only one camera, it uses that one. Choose the camera yourself in Settings › Companion › Doorbell › Camera.
Then the camera offers no stream to Home Assistant. With Ring it takes a few seconds before there is live video.
Check that the app may use the microphone in the iPadOS Settings app, under instnt hub. Talking is only possible during a call after someone rings.
